BSTI Result at Glance

Coming to the overall result of the first ever BSTI survey for top beaches in India, to say it was startling for us would be an understatement. There were many revelations, for one the top rank in terms of overall tourist-quotient according to the strict standards set by us went to Minicoy Beach from the lesser known Lakshwadweep Island and not to any of the top money earning beaches of Goa or Kerala. Ofcourse the second and third positions were taken by Varkala and Bekal from the `Gods own country’ but nothing from Goa did show any sparks to merit a rank in the first three.

Again Beach No 7, a much praised beach in terms of beauty earning accolades and praise from both western and Indian media in that order was placed in a distant 16th rank. Lesser known Beaches of India like Kudle in Gokarna and Mandarmani near Digha in West Bengal were ahead of it.

The fight was tough and interestingly there were many ties with quite a number of beaches tied in the same rank having garnered same number of marks. In the 11th rank were two beaches from Goa Colaba and Candolim. Rank number 12 saw the maximum number of beaches in a tie with Swargadwar(Puri), Nagao(Diu) and Miramar(Goa). In the lower end of the bracket, for position number 21 we had Manori near Mumbai and Om in Gokarna, Karnataka while for 22 we had Gopalpur(Orissa) and Ramakrshna(Vizag) close ranks. The Beach with the lowest rank in our standards was Poovar. No doubt Poovar is a Popular Beach but things need to brighten up a bit on a large number of fronts as detailed in our study.
